my jeep auto has just started to make a noise when driven and black smoke comes from the exhaust .it does not seem to wnat to change gear automatically.there also seems to be a noise from the engine when the car stops.

Black smoke usually indicates a very rich fuel mixture. If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify trouble codes. You may have a fuel pressure issue, TPS issue, MAF issue...
