Problems with a cloud of smoke only when starting my Santa fe 2006 in morning local garage mentioned something to do with a flap in or on the manifold works similar to a choke flap. is this expensive to replace or repair.
Local garage sprayed something on or in the manifold to free a kind of inlet flap. But wasn’t too sure if it would work. Says it’s a big job to take manifold off of my 2006 Santa fe. Might be a spring that is stuck or broken that works the flap.

It is a whitish smoke and it last only for about a few seconds and it smells of diesil. when you look at rev counter it appears the car is trying to run at tick over speed rather than being a bit higher until it warms up.

A diesel that blows white smoke and has a distinct smell of fuel is often a sign of incomplete combustion as it clears up rather quickly, I would be thinking that you may have a failed glow plug, these plugs pre heat the combustion chamber for easy cold starting, and stop working after a short period of time after start up as the engine has enough internal temp to take over, get the glow plugs checked out first.

I thought if the glow plug/s were faulty it wouldnt start right or have trouble starting my car starts on the first turn of the key. I would have thought the garage would have ruled the plugs out but i will check with them. Thanks again.

Just to clarify, you may have one glow under preforming that is causing a cool cylinder, enough to start and run, but cold enough to cause problems until the cylinder warms up, this is usually only a min or two. certainly get the glow plugs tested first.
