Oil leaking where I'm placing the oil filter

What do you mean? The oil is leaking after you removed the filter? There had better be oil leaking from there with the filter off. If it's leaking after you installed a new filter, check for a "double-gasket". That's when the old one stuck on there and you didn't see it and pull it off. We all do that sooner or later.
