I have knocking sounds coming from the engine that are continuous and constant. I am not sure what it is or how to fix it. We took it to a mechanic and he said he made some "valve adjustments" and charged us $350, but it's still making the noise. Any ideas on how to fix this? Would it be a good idea to buy a used engine and have someone install it for us?

It is hard for me to tell where the noise is coming from without hearing it. Tell me, is it a tick or more of a knock? When the engine speed increases, does the sound go faster? Is there anything that makes it worse, or better?
