2006 Honda Crv Just Yesterday While Stuck Traffic Smelled Over Heating Odor

Just yesterday while stuck in traffic I smelled an over heating odor, looked at my gauge and it was on H. Once is got back to 60+mph temp dropped about 75%. Crept back up to about 50% after slowing down but not stopping. No hissing, steam or extreme heat when I opened the hood once home. Ideas? Thanks guys!!!

low coolant, bad thermostat or you may have damaged the head gasket from this condition.
