2006 Ford Taurus. When first started for the day, there will be a quick "ching" noise when the key in the ignition is turned. It will sometimes do this during the day when started.
Also, when starting the car first thing in the morning, when the car is put into reverse to back out of the garage, I will hear a flapping noise under the hood. Once put in OD I will continue to hear the noise for about a minute and then it goes away. I am unable to "recreate" the noise in Park so that I can look under the hood while the car is running. I have, however, checked the S. belt for wear and tear and/or displacement and it seems to be fine. The flapping noise is usually noticed when the car has been started from a cold start and put into reverse and not when it has been sitting for just a few hours.

it sounds like a broken flex plat, that is between the transmission and the engine, you will have to remove the transmission to repair it

Cold day yesterday (30s). Started car and heard flapping noise immediately in S. belt area. Arrived at destination and car sat parked for 5 hrs. in cold and when started heard "ching" and loud flapping noise and engine sounded rough. Noise went away after left to idle. Couldn't view the S belt area (it was dark) but was able to lift hood and hear noise in S belt area very clearly. Started two more times after that and started fine.
Where is flex plate located? How can a novice view it?
No lack of power... no engine light... no overheating.

were is the S. belt routing could be two things, 1. Belt idler pulley Item#1 or 2. drive belt tension in Item#6

I looked in the S. belt area today when car started and was running fine. Looked like tensioner had some wobble in it. Am planning to have it looked at and I will advise you of the outcome. Crossing my fingers it's not too involved financially. :o) Thank you Dr. Loot.

if the tension-er is wobbling it is no good, needs to be replaced and you are welcome.
