I have a 2006 Ford Freestyle with a whining noise in the front end starting about 20mph. Gets worse with higher rpms. This noise has started and stoped twice, last time was quiet for 2 weeks before starting again. Whel bearings have been ruled out by two mechanics who stated that it is coming from the transmission area. Transmission shifts/works fine. noise is just obnoxious.

Thanks for your reply hmac300! What is a carrier? Does that involve removal of the trans?

yes the trans has to come out and apart the carrier is a planetary gear set that has gears and bearing init a lot of times the bearings wear out on one gear and cause the whining. but it could be something else in the trans causing it or an axle shaft problem
