I have a 2006 Ford Super Duty F-250, Diesel 6.8 with 4WD, My check gauges light comes on and I noticed no oil pressure on the gauge, I immediately pulled over, checked the oil which was fine. I did find that so long as I kept the RPM's up above about 800 the oil gauge showed good oil pressure as soon as I let it idle again the gauge showed no oil pressure again. It was cold this morning (about 30F) Can you please advise me what may be wrong?

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, if normal replace the oil pressure switch. If abnormal could mean oil pump and engine bearing.

This could be an oil presser relief valve sticking, I would first check the pressure with a mechanical gauge and do an oil change with a good quality flush, let me know the oil pressure cold idle, hot idle hot 1500RPM's.

I will get the pressure manually checked. I also recently heard that the engine would be impossible to run at no oil pressure, that this could be the sending unit malfunctioning or possibly a wire problem?

Some senders are hooked up to a cut off timer, if no oil pressure is detected after a few sec running they shut down.
