car idles OK with vent/heater on. When I turn on the a/c it alternates between 900 rpm and 500-600 rpm when the a/c unit cycles on and off. I think the freon level might be low because it is normally cold a/c at idle but now it's not, only get cold when driving. Any suggestions besides getting the freon level checked?

could be the idle air control motor not compensating for the load. you need to have it checked. the ac issue sounds like a separate issue. it may be low in freon and needs to be checked for a leak.
