I have a 2006 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl. The check engine light came on and it came up 4th cylinder misfire. The check engine light now flashes when I am driving through the city but not on the highway or freeway. A mechanic told me that it needed a new exhaust valve, does that sound right?

need to find out the reason first.

codes never identify bad parts, just failed systems.

start witha compression test. check plugs, coil/wires as well.

My gas guage said I had 1/8 it started missing and shut off, I put gas in and after cranking for a while it started. Then today it said I had just under a half a tank and did the same thing. I thought it could be the sending unit although I am not sure how much gas it actually used. If I change the sending unit how can I be sure that was it? could it be something else that would cause it to shut if it doesnt have a certain amount of gas in it like the fuel pump, and if so why would the amount change?

What to do is fill the tank and set the trip odometer. You should get nearly 300 miles + from a tank of fuel. Run it until it gets near 300 miles and see what the fuel gauge says and then check how many gallons of fuel the tank takes to refill. I believe you have a 16 gallon tank.

Let me know what you find.

I did what you said and determined that the guage is off by about 1/4 of a tank. So now is it the guage itself or something else like the sending unit?

Thanks

Chances are it is the sending unit from the tank. The only way to be 100% sure is to remove it and check voltage drop as the float drops. I wish I had an easier answer for you.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Car misfires and shakes badly at 2750 rpms. I replaced all spark plugs. I also replaced the coil and fuel injector for #2. Still misfire on #2. I get codes p0202 and p0302. Compression test was done and it was good. Can it be the injector connector and how do i check it? I need to take intake manifold to get to injectors.

Once the Check Engine light turned on, there is a diagnostic fault code stored in the Engine Computer's memory. Many auto parts stores will read those codes for you for free. That will get you into the right circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the specific defective part.

I'd still visually check for spark at the plugs. Check for injector pulse, also, use a noid lite.

How do you check the electrical connector to the injector? You have to take the intake manifold off or can you do that without removing it and how do you do it?

When the car gets heated up or it is really hot outside the car starts to chug and sputter then dies. The check engine light came on....and the car will not start until it is cooled down outside and the car is cooled off.

Check engine light:

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

I have an intermittent misfire at idle & intermittent hesitation. New plugs 5000 miles ago. Seems to be worse the warmer the ambient temperature - engine temp seems to have no bearing on miss. No check engine light.

Misfires can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.

Prior to replacement of plugs and wires engine ran fine minus a VERY intermittent misfire on cylinder 4. Now having installed new plugs and wires the engine runs incredibly rough and tries to stall. When placed in drive or reverse the entire vehicle will begin to shake violently. I then removed the plugs and wires and put the old ones back on to see if the proglem was the new parts. Even with the old plugs and wires the engine will misfire horribly.
Currently there are no dtc's though I have not driven the vehicle under these rough conditions to allow it to process a drive cycle. The only thing I can think of is a coil went bad during removal and installation of new plugs, I just don't want to throw parts at the car without knowing the cause of trouble.

Thanks for any help,

DISCUSSION Page 1 of 2 NEW SPARK PLUG FOR 2.4L ENGINE -2004 Dodge Stratus SE

The new style spark plug is now recommended and preferred for use in all 2004 model year vehicles and all prior model year vehicles that are equipped with a 2.4L engine. See above table and verify correct engine sales code. NOTE: To eliminate concerns of a possible high secondary ignition voltage flashover, caused by a thermal set of the ignition cable spark plug boot(s) to the old style spark plug (RE14MCC5), install new ignition cables when replacing the old style spark plugs (RE14MCC5) with the new style spark plug(s) (RE16MC or LZTR4A-11) for the first time. I put the original spark plugs back in and still have the same problem. If it were solely the fault of the plugs and wires, installing the original worn out parts should have returned the vehicle to at least a driveable state I would think.

I am having the same problem with my 2000 Stratus, I just got a new distributor, cap, spark plugs and wires. It drove fine for about a week and then started misfiring in reverse and first, shaking violently until finally thunping into second gear. I hope there is a reasonable answer to this, for your sake and mine.

Going by what I found in this diagram, you did install your plug wires incorrectly, re do them as shown in picture!

This car has 2 issues. 1st - The engine over heats all the time. I've replaced the thermostat. It helped, but still not fixed. Problem 2 is I get a cylinder 3 misfire code. I had the tank cleaned out. Put in new fuel filter. This keeps happening. Not all the time. Also seems to happen more when the engine overheat light comes on.

Are the cooling fans kicking on?

The misfire could be a plug or possible coil.

I would replace spark plug, if problem persists, then check compression on all cylinders.

Yes the cooling fans are coming on. Spark plugs are new. I did this to see if it would fix the mis-fire. should I swap the coils on 3 & 4.

You can check all the fusible links and maxi fuses but other than that, the circuit will have to be troubleshooted by a tech following a wiring diagram.
