Starter trouble

The battery was dead and while attempting to jump-strat it the ignition only made a "crrrrr" sound and did not want to start. We tried push-starting the car but it did not work. What could the problem be?

charge and check the battery.make sure the battery connections are good and clean.if no still you need to check the voltage at the starter.
