I can not select the gears on my Citroen Xsara Picasso!!

I can not select the gears on my Citroen Xsara Picasso. The gear handle moves freely but it’s as if the gear cable is broken, or that something has moved out of place. The gears must be in neutral position as the engine starts OK. Any ideas and how much would it cost to fix?

Check the gear shift linkage adjustment, dunno the cost of repairs it varies with location
