How much should I be paying for a new alternator

I had to take my van to the nearest garage to get fixed and the have charged me more than I thought it should be. The recovery man gave me a rough idea of what to expect and it final bill is double. I would like to know how much it should be, I know you can't give me exact costs, I just need to know roughly.

I paid £145 for the part. I didn't have a choice of garage so just want to know if I've been ripped off. Thanks
