When you "trip" a code with diagnostic equipment, is it the same as what the garage does when they "reprogram the computer" in your car?

id on't know what you mean by trip a code, but if you are scanning and a code comes up its 'not the same as reprogramming your computer. Only a pro with a pro style scanner can do that.
