Hello,
Typically, when the pads are worn down, they will start to make noise when you apply the brake. There are little meta tabs that rubs against the rotor as a reminder to change the pads.
If the pads are allowed to be on the vehicle for an extended period of time it will damage the rotors as well.

Keep in mind anytime you change the brake pads, the rotors need to be resurfaced (give it is within the specification) to extend the life of the pads. Which can be done at your local auto parts store.
