Emissions light on mechanic checked with computer and it says thermostat problem, which will be fixed tomorrow.

This morning transmission oil leaking which is being fixed today.

Are these two problems indicative of serious problems with car?

Lots of different things can cause a leak. Some are serious; most are not. What you described can happen to any car.
