my 2005 volvo s40 diesel shows the following reading on the dash:power supply service urgent.any idea?

just yesterday,my volvo started showing the sign,power supply service urgent.it drove well but the sound of the engine changed a little bit.today a mechanic started the car and connected his diagnostic machine.after a while,it could not even start any more.
