I have a 2005 VW Beetle and the check engine came on yesterday and today when I started my car it made this strange sort of sucking noise for about 30 seconds. I have kept up with the maintenance on the vehicle and I just had the oil changed a few weeks ago and there were no problems. Any idea what the problem could be?

The 'sucking' noise is normal. It's your air pump. However, if you've never heard this noise before, you may have an air leak from your air pump, which would explain why your MIL is on.

The pump rivets sometimes rust and the pump itself splits open. Have a look at your air pump.
