Engine has a horrible rattling sound?

I drive a vauxhall zafira 1.9cdti 05 the engine runs fine but has a horrible rattling noise when sat on tick over any suggestions?

When you hear the tick, is it only at first start up? Is the engine oil clean and full?

You may have a spun rod bearing, can you tell if the noise is coming from the top or bottom of the engine? If the noise is at the bottom suspect a bad rod bearing. Please go over this guide to help you see what's going on.
