is there an adjustment screw on gearbox or rack and pinion steering to adjust play.

Yes, the steering rack has a special adjusting allan key nut that has a lock nut to hold it in place at rear of pinion housing. Care must be taken not to overadjust. The rack seldom requires adjustment and if you have too much free play, it can mean bad linkages or ball joints.
