Check fuel pump pressure. When checking, pay attention to fuel pressure drop off. That is when you shut the key. It should maintain pressure. If it quickly drops to 0, you have a leak. That will cause a delayed start.

Keep in mind, if the vehicle hasn't been tuned up for a long time, you may need plugs or other ignition components. Also, if the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free.
