I had a new clutch fitted yesterday and now the pedal is very soft, I have phoned the garage and they say this is normal. Is this correct because I dont like the way the pedal goes straight down when pressed as thoe not much resistance.

That is determined by how strong the pressure plate is. If the pedal has less resistance now that it did before, it probably means you have a less heavy duty pressure plate, however if they replaced the hydraulics also, there could have been a change in design to account for less resistance.
