2005 Grand Prix: I got in the car and pulled out of my driveway when I noticed a funndy smell. I made it 3 houses down when my car totaly freaked out. Suddenly, the horn started honking, the wipers started going 90 miles and hour and the emergency flashers started flashing. I tried to turn everything off to no avail when I noticed what looked like a small stream of smoke coming from the instrument panel. I immediately turned the key off, which stopped the wipers, but the battery cable had to be removed to stop the horn and flashers. That is when I noticed that several of my relays are burnt. (A bit of history - About a month ago, I was getting messages that my turn signal lights were out, all four of them, one and then anouther. I assumed it must be a fuse so I had the fuses and light bulbs replaced. After that, I still had a message that my front left turn signal was out. No other problems that I am aware of.) Could this be the computer or some other part that needs replacing or is it likey a short in the electrical system? I called the dealer and explained my problem and all they would tell me is that I need to bring it in, they charge $98 per hour and it would probably take several days to figure it out. I do not have 800 bucks a day x several days + the cost of a tow truck. And, I certainly can't afford to run up a bill then not be able to pay to get it out or spend money on a wrecker to and from the shop and still not have transportation. Any suggestions will be grealty appreciated. Please help! - Damsel in Distress.

Symptom description indicates that the wireharness had a short somewhere and the overheating of the relays indicates the problem could have started from there. When relays overheats, they can stick and cause the components related to it being turned on.

The signals alerting you to errors in the signal system could be due to a shorting in the electrical circuits.

You would need to check the wireharness under dash to check for signs of wireharness being burnt by the electrical shortings.

If wiresharness are good, most probably replacing the fuse box and relays should solve the proble. If wireharness are burnt, then the wuld have to be replaced.
