transmition noise

i have a 2005 pontiac g6,,3.5 v6 engine.and when starting up in am,there is a loud noise (sounds like comming from tran area)and when put into drive or reverse,noise is gone.when car is warmed up,noise still there but not as loud.but as soon as you take it out of park or neutral and put into drive or reverse,noise gone.....help.
is it really serious and if so is it a expensive repair.
