when driving home from work my oil light came on. by the time i got home the car was very loud and would shut off at red lights. i checked the oil and it was approx. 2 quarts low. i filled it to the line, but now the car is very loud. the idle isn't bad, but when i depress the gas pedal it sounds like a lawnmower. i cannot have the car maintenanced until this weekend, but need it to transport to/from work. is it safe to drive?

More damage will occure and a more expensive repair. When an oil light comes on engine should be shut off immediately

It sounds like you have already gone too far and will be looking at a new engine. That one is going to stop real soon.
