When I press the accelerator pedal, the engine races (rev counter shoots up) but the car accelerates very slowly.

Check the transmission fluid.
You should check to see the fluid level, color (should be red – if it is brown of grayish, this indicated internal problems; usually from deteriorating clutches) and the smell of the fluid (if it smells burned this could indicate that the fluid is overheating – which will deteriorate the clutches).
