Hi have a Mazda 6 estate 2005 2.0 diesel. Cambelt changed in the last 1,000 miles and water pump checked. Rcecently, it has started whirring on acceleration. Someone has suggested it could be the alternator. What do you think? Is it costly to repair?Cheryl Whirring noise on acceleration

It may be that the tension is too tight on the belt, or it could just be a characteristic of an aftermarket belt. I would return to the place of service to have it checked out.

Thanks for your reply. The noise occurred prior to changing the belt and has continued after. The garage tried to locate the source of the noise but couldn't find it.

You can check for the noise using a stethascope, they are inexpensive at any automotive store. It might be a bearing on one of the pulleys for the belt. You can also try using a small hose about 2 ft long. Put one end close to your ear and the other on what the belt is driving such as the altinator. With the engine running you can hear if a bearing is bad in the hose. Keep it away from the belt.
