2005 Kia Sportage Starting Aircon Turned On There Spitting Sound Engine Cuts Out

When starting and aircon turned on there is a spitting sound and the engine cuts out when I turn off aircon starts and runs ok.
What may cause this ?

have your a/c checked it may have a locked up compressor
