starter just clicks repeatedly instead of cranking over?

my 3.0l tdi starter just clicks repeatedly instead of cranking over. wil start perfectly with a wire from battery to starter lug on starter. please can any one point me in right direction. thankyou

Hello,

It sounds like wiring issue to the starter.
Inspect the battery cable that goes to the starter. Make sure it is secured and free from any corrosion.
Do a thorough inspection of the wire and report back what you find.
