I have recently been having trouble getting into gear, specifically with 2nd, 4th and reverse. A 'whirring' noise occurs and the gear does not engage, but only intermittently.

Almost exactly a year ago I had a similar problem which escalated until I had no gears. This was caused by snapped gear selector cables. Until now I have had no issue since this was fixed.

What might be causing this again?
