if I start at a stop sign it would dart out with a thud

I bought a used Taurus. 12V Vulcan engine. The transmission went out at 76,000 and then was rebuilt. After it was rebuilt, if I start at a stop sign it would dart out with a thud (between first and second gear?). Everything else seems to be fine. I called the mechanic who rebuilt the transmission, and he said that can happen right after a rebuilt but that the problem would go away soon. But, the problem is worsening. 8,000 miles after rebuilt, the transmission went out again. So, he rebuilt it again, but the problem remains. So I had him rebuild it again and again (3 times) but the problem won't go away. I believe that the transmission will go out again soon. Could this problem be happening not because of the transmission but something else? Please help!

Has the engine mounts been checked, sometimes the thump you feel/hear can be the engine raising up then setting back down. If the mounts check out, you may need to take it to an alternative shop for a second opinion. You did the right thing by taking the car back to him 3 times, but after that, its another shops turn at it, hand the original builder the bill.

Let me know what happens or if you need additional info.

I forgot to include something in my first message. When I am at a stop, if I press the gas and immediately lift my foot, and wait 2 to 3 seconds, then press the gas again (like you would drive stick shift), the problem is much less. But you should not start too slow or too fast (I tried so many times so I know to a certain degree how to start in a way that lets me avoid the problem a bit).

Hi Fred,

Its sounds like a shift servo dampening spring is broken or has been left out of the rebuild. Please check the mounts then take the car to a different shop, explain to them the trouble you have had and what we think it might be, we are super interested in the fix on this car so please let me know how it goes.
