We have a 2005 Ford Taurus. The engine has started revving by itself. When driving on the highway I can take foot off of gas pedal and car will not slow down. Revs remain high when stopped and car will accelerate as soon as foot removed from brake pedal (ie. gas pedal does not need to be depressed for the car to accelerate). Will rev up around 1500RPMs - tried putting it in neutral and the RPMs went up over 3000RPMs. Same happened when it was put in park. This revving can also happen as soon as car is started. Can be resolved by tapping gas pedal - this brings revs down.

Took it to mechanic who disconnected the cruise control cable. He is waiting for a replacement from Ford (has already been a couple of days but new cable has not arrived yet) but car is still revving so something else must be wrong...but I have no idea what it might be so I am looking for suggestions as to what the problem might be.

Your mechanic is going in the right direction as this is a very common issue with this vehicle. Just google it with your car info and you will see all the complaints and fixes.

Thanks.

I spoke to him earlier today to see if the part had come in because the car is needed on Tuesday (we are dropping it off to him Sunday night so that he has it first thing Monday morning). He seemed to think there might be something else wrong because it is still happening despite the fact that he has disconnected the cruise control cable. I was just wondering if something else might be wrong, or would this still happen despite that cable having been disconnected?

Alright, I watched the video and the repair made sense. My mechanic had disconnected the cable but it was still sitting in the same spot where it caused the problem.

I didn't have any bag ties in the house so I put the cruise control cable back in place as demonstrated in the video and wrapped electrical tape around the connection. That seems to have done the trick - I took the car out for a drive and it seemed to work perfectly. I got it up to about 80kmh and the revs came down as soon as I took my foot off of the gas.

This should do the trick until the part arrives at my mechanic's shop. The car is needed Tuesday, and possibly Monday as well, so it should drive fine on those days even if the part still hasn't arrived from Ford.

Thanks for posting that video, it was a great help.
