2005 Ford Freestar Started Heat Smoke Doesn T Run Act Heating Temp Gauge

Ok, so my freestar has started to heat up and smoke, but it doesn't run like or act like its heating up. The temp gauge doesn't even read that its heating up. What could it be?

check thermostat check tosee if heater hoses are both hot or about same temp.
