2005 Ford Focus Recently Had 05 Estae M O T Ed Passed Only Just On Emissions

I recently had my 05 focus estae m.o.t'ed, it passed but only just on the emissions test. The mechanic thinks it is probably the catalytic converter and quoted £500. Before I agree to this, could there be something else causing the emissions? I have very recently noticed it has become a little bit juddery, and seems to have lost a little bit of power. Any advice would be grately appreciated.

Is the check engine light coming on? as far as the converter, it can be checked before replacement. Have him check back pressure.
