When the truck is running and there is a full tank of gas the gauge buries itself below the empty line and the check gauges light is on too. How can I fix this?

Hi:
Have the vehicle computer scanned for codes. If the light is on, it will help identify the problem. Most parts stores will scan for free.

As far as the fuel gauge, does it work at any other times? Chances are the rheostat on the float is bad. It is part of the fuel pump and requires removal of the fuel tank to check and replace.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

I have the same problem with my 2005 Ford Explorer 6cyl 4 wheel drive auto. 94,000 miles. We read the codes and it said it was the float that reads your level which is located on the fuel pump. We bought a new fuel pump and it is still not working any ideas what else it may be.

The sending unit in the tank is bad not the pump. There is a fuel gauge tester that checks the gauge. Replace the sending unit and the fuel pump if old. Ty for using 2carpros
