it may be a bad gas pedal due to being drive by wire. check unit at top

Couldn't it also be a dirty throttle plate?

I kind of doubt it but clean it with choke cleaner on both sides if you think it is. it sounds more like the resistor in gas pedal is the cause.

I think your right about the resistor, click is coming from under dash where pedal linkage is.
How would WD40 work ? or silicon spray ?

they would both short it out then you would need a new gas pedal
