have there ever been any problems with the rear differential plug coming off on its own?

Nope. Do you have the rubber one on the rear cover? It could be deteriorated and mushy but that isn't common.

i have a rubber plug and ive never had a problem with it just coming off. i recently had my oil changed and they forgot to put the plug back in and of course i didnt know. long story short, i needed $1200 of work done to my back end because of it and the oil change place won't take responsibility for it. im taking them to court soon and im trying to prove my case. thank you so much for you're answer. im sure it will be helpful
