Why would a car with an automatic transmissions gear shift get locked up. The vehicle will not shift out of park. Upon depressing the bracket it will move slightly to the right but will not move down into reverse or any other gear.

The gear shift will not move out of park.... even when pushing the brake or moving the wheel....rocking the vehicle it seems to be frozen in park. It does make a weird noise when depressing the brake.

Check if the brake lights are working. If not, check the fuses. This is an interlock problem which is tied to the brakes.
