I have the SUV listed above with a 5.3L. My oil pressure gauge reads 80 PSI. What do you think it is?

Most likely cause is a oil pressure sensor/unplug sensor see if gauge drops to zero if it does suspect shorted oil pressure sensor and replace.

Hi,

The idea that it is high could indicate a couple of things. First, it could be the sensor or a short as mentioned. Also, there could be an issue with the oil pressure relief valve. I attached a pic of its location below.

Here is what I suggest: We need to identify if the oil pump is actually producing that much pressure. So, we need to confirm what it is. To do that, you need to rent a mechanical oil pressure switch and gauge to confirm. Most part stores will lend you one free of charge.

When you get it, remove the oil pressure switch from the rear top of the engine. See pic 2. Next, install the mechanical switch in its place and start the engine.

If the pressure is normal, replace the electric sensor. If it is high, suspect the relief valve is stuck.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Joe

Hi,

Our SUV's oil gauge has been running high, above 40 but not all the way to 80. Plus we have to run the car for a few more minutes each morning or we have a loud knocking noise from it. Are the two related? The oil has been changed regularly, always, and the stick reads full.

Thanks,
Chrislyn Morris

Hi, it is normal for the oil gauge to read high when the engine is cold, or sitting overnight. Some will go as high as 75 PSI. When cold. What does the oil gauge read hot. Or running for say a half hour or more. If the oil gauge drops below 10 PSI when hot. I would be concerned. 4 to 5 PSI will put the oil light on. Which means low oil pressure. As for the knocking noise, it could be many things. Without listening to it. Would be hard to diagnosis.

Hope this helped you,
Good luck.
