The fan in my 2005 Chevy Malibu blows out air but when the heater is turned on no hot air comes out.

Check radiator coolant level.
When heater is turned on, are both heater hoses almost same temperature or inlet is warmer than outlet?
Is HVAC system automatic or manual?
System is equipped with self-diagnostics and appropriate scan tools are required to retrieve the trouble codes.

The check engine light recently came on. I am wondering if that might let us know what is wrong with the heater. I will have to check the inlet and outlet hoses to see if one is warmer than the other. I do not know if the HVAC system is automatic or manual. How do I find this out?

The diagrams shows the manual and Auto Schematic.
Auto has the wording Auto on the mode switch label.
