The traction control light and the abs light is on on my 2005 Chevy Impala. After bringing it in for service, the mechanic is not concerned. should I be?

That usually means that he has no idea how to fix it. What it means to you is that the ABS computer has sensed a malfunction and shut the system down. It stored a trouble code to identify the situation it saw and that needs to be diagnosed. It's probably an electrical issue and shouldn't effect the regular brakes. you just won't have any anti-lock or traction control.
