I have strut assembly removed and want to peplace the shock.I have spring compressors in place but it appears to be a special tool needed to remove the upper nut holding the top of the shock in place. The shock shaft has a star bit reciever to hold the shaft in place but then I can't turn the nut without a special wrench, correct?

Yes a impact gun or you have to hold the shaft.
