Shifter or transmission probs?

my daughter has had a couple of times where when she puts the shifter in "d" for drive, the car backs up. It has scared her and she has been turning the car off and starting it back up. Any ideas?

That sounds like a linkage problem. Start there. Something could be loose or damaged.
