2005 STS V8. I dropped my girlfriend off at home the other night before I went to pick up my son. When I arrived at where my son was I turned off the car and immediately noticed the display said 'no fob detected'. That's when I realized my girlfriend had my fob. I instantly put my foot on the brake and pushed the start button. Fortunately the car started! I left the car running and went inside to get my son (left the driver door open for fear that I wouldn't be able to get back in the car). Drove the car home thinking all was well. After turning off the car and going inside the house for a few minutes, I came back outside and noticed that the headlights had not shut off. I went to the car and shut them off.
Since then, the car has intermittent problems starting. Push the button (or fob) and nothing but a click (noticed the fan moves about a quarter of an inch). Eventually, after numerous tries, the car will click multiple times and start. Strange things happen afterward while the car is running... turn signals work but don't click. stereo is on but wont play music. I put a new battery in it about two months ago. Same problem with either of my two fobs. Same problem trying to start it with the fob. Checked battery connections. Grounded the battery cables together for one minute.

forgot to add that I have had it on an analyzer and no codes appeared. Also contacted on-star and their diagnostic came back clean.

your starter is bad replace it.

I doubt it is the starter. With the multiple problems you are experiencing it may be more of a communications problem, or poor connection. This could be at one of the electrical centers(fuse blocks). what brand of battery did you have put in, and has the battery been tested. One assumes that a replacement battery is a good battery, but this is not the case. The good batteries come from a source that has high turnover on their inventory, and good maintenance practices on the batteries that are in inventory(i.e. rotating stock/charging, etc...) Onstar, if I am not mistaken, only addresses emissions type faults in their diagnostics. What I mean by that is, if you have a powertrain code they will inform you of it. If you have a body code(in a module other than PCM/TCM), you may not get that information from them.
