My dashboard guage will indicate that I have a full tank of gas, but after driving for a spell the needle will move to empty and the indicator light comes on. I have ran out of gas quite a few times. I would like to know what I am dealing with and what can I do?

the sender unit in the tank may have failed. you would replace the entire module to repair.

It is better to perform test first. Such conditons can be due to a faulty gauge or body control faults. Get a scan to checkfor BCM trouble codes.
