what are the possible causes of my brake lights staying on?

2005 Audi A4 Avant 1.8T; what are the possible causes of my brake lights staying on even when the pedal is not pushed down? brake lights as well as light on top of rear gate going off and on for extended time without brake pedal being pushed in. thanks

i would suggest checking the switch on the brake pedal.
