Black smoke will not be from the oil, you will get oil residue in the turbo and induction I would be telling him not to bother as a few drops is nothing. Is this a petrol or diesel engine?

no filter in turbo system, black smoke is fuel smoke, injectors may need looking at. if low compression you would see white smoke from incomplete combustion.
