Periodically all the dashboard lights, the car locks, the remote control for the radio, cruise control, and the automatic shift for the transmission and the air conditioning go out. The car starts, runs ok but goes right into Drive, has headlights but no other lights and no directional signal. If I disconnect the battery and put the two cables together for 30-40 minutes and then reconnect them, everything is fine and it works for a few weeks. Is it the computer that needs to be replaced?

It may be a weak battery they can cause problems like this have it checked for condition including load test. Autoparts tirestores do for free. If battery is ok after testing then have it scanned see if something else is screwing up. Even if the battery is a year old.

I'll check the battery. Do you think I need to have the entire computer replaced? Hard to see how it could be bad if I can reset it that way.

There may be a few modules(computer) involved, it could be a dash going bad or one of the modules. Make sure battery terminal ends are clean. Low voltage can cause a bunch of problems like that. Also if belt and tensioner have never been replaced they should be at 60k both of th em. Because it will give low voltage as well as slip when a load is on it.
