I have a 2004 Jetta and recently the temp guage has been fluctuationg a lot. Whether the car is cold or not does not matter. The temp goes to the 260 degree mark, especially when going up hills. Also the heat is not working in th car. Now the check engine light has come on. All of this and the car seems to be running fine and the engine does not seem hot at all. Any suggestions?

Replace both the thermostat and engine coolant temperature sensor.

This should solve your problem.
