I have a 2004 VW Beetle I do not have a gauge to let me know if the car is overheating. The coolant light(red) has been coming on and now the check engine light is coming on (no flashing) What does this mean for the future of the car?

Red light is telling you it is overheating. Have the water pump, thermostat and fans checked.

Have the ECM scanned. Probably a temperature related code.

Water pump flow test:

good:

Radiator fans checking:
Turn the key ON, turn the interior fan on and hit the A/C button, do both radiator fans turn?

Jumping the fans directly to check:

Thermostat removing: 2.0L is the same location, engine just looks a little different.
